Before your Digital Remote can be used to operate your TV, VCR/DVR and other devices, it must be programmed with the correct models. The instructions, along with the codes for your models, will allow you to program your Digital Remote to control your TV, VCR, and other devices. If your model has more than one code listed, it may be necessary to try a few codes before your Digital Remote properly controls your TV, VCR/DVR and other devices.
To program the Digital Remote for your TV model
Note: For TV/VCR combo devices, please follow the instructions below to learn how to Program the Digital Remote for Combo devices.
- Locate the TV's setup code in TV Model Setup Codes for the Digital Remote.
- Turn your TV on.
- Holding the Digital Remote away from the TV, press the TV button; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the selected mode key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter the first 4-digit code for your TV. If performed correctly, the selected mode key will blink twice.
- Point the Digital Remote at the TV and press POWER to test the TV. If this did not work properly, repeat these steps using a different code.
To program the Digital Remote for your VCR/DVR model
Note: For TV/VCR combo devices, please follow the instructions below to learn how to Program the Digital Remote for other devices.
- Locate the VCR/DVR's setup code in VCR Model Setup Codes for the Digital Remote.
- Turn your VCR/DVR on.
- Holding the Digital Remote away from the VCR/DVR, press the VCR button; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the selected mode key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter the first 4-digit code for your VCR/DVR. If performed correctly, the selected mode key will blink twice.
- Point the Digital Remote at the VCR and press POWER to test the VCR/DVR. If this did not work properly, repeat these steps using a different code.
To program the Digital Remote for your CD/DVD Player
- Locate the CD/DVD player's setup code in CD/DVD Player Model Setup Codes for the Digital Remote.
- Turn your CD/DVD player on.
- Holding the Digital Remote away from the CD/DVD player, press the DVD button; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the selected mode key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter the first 4-digit code for your CD/DVD player. If performed correctly, the selected mode key will blink twice.
- Point the Digital Remote at the CD/DVD player and press POWER to test the CD/DVD player. If this did not work properly, repeat these steps using a different code.
To program the Digital Remote for your audio component
- Locate the audio component's setup code in Audio Model Setup Codes for the Digital Remote.
- Turn your audio component on.
- Holding the Digital Remote away from the audio component, press the AUD button; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the selected mode key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter the first 4-digit code for your audio component. If performed correctly, the selected mode key will blink twice.
- Point the Digital Remote at the audio component and press POWER to test the audio component. If this did not work properly, repeat these steps using a different code.
To program the Digital Remote for other devices
- Locate the device's setup code in Other Device Setup Codes for the Digital Remote.
- Turn the device on.
- Holding the Digital Remote away from the device, press the DVD button; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the selected mode key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter the first 4-digit code for your device. If performed correctly, the selected mode key will blink twice.
- Point the Digital Remote at the device and press POWER to test the device. If this did not work properly, repeat these steps using a different code.
Searching For Your Code
If your home entertainment device does not respond to the Digital Remote after trying all of the codes listed for your brand, or if your brand is not listed at all, try searching for your code. For example, to search for a code for your TV:
- Turn on your TV.
- On the remote control, press TV once; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the TV key blinks twice, then release >SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 1. The TV key will blink twice.
- Aim the remote control at the TV and slowly alternate between pressing PWR and TV. Stop when the TV turns off. NOTE: In the search mode, the remote control will send IR codes from its library to the selected device, starting with the most popular code first.
- Press SETUP once to lock in the code. The TV key will blink twice.
- To search for the codes of your other devices, repeat steps 1 through 5, but substitute the appropriate key (e.g., AUX, DVD, AUD, or CBL) for the device you are searching for.
Checking The Codes
If you have set up the Digital Remote using the Searching For Your Code procedure, you may need to find out which four-digit code is operating your equipment. For example, to find out which code is operating your TV:
- On the remote control, press TV once; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the TV key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 0. The TV key will blink twice.
- To view the code for the first digit, press 1 once. Wait 3 seconds and count the number of times the TV key blinks (e.g., 3 blinks = 3) and write down the number. NOTE: If a code digit is "0", the selected mode key will not blink.
- Repeat step 3 three more times for the remaining digits. Use 2 for the second digit, 3 for the third digit, and 4 for the fourth digit.
- To check for other device codes, repeat steps 1 through 4, but substitute the appropriate key (e.g., AUX, DVD, AUD, or CBL) for the device you are checking.
Programming Channel Control Lock
By default, the remote control’s channel-control capabilities are locked to the Digital SmartBox. The affected keys* are 0~9, CH+, CH-, ENTER, and LAST. This will guarantee that you do not inadvertently change a channel on your TV or VCR. However, you can de-activate this feature to allow full access to these keys in the TV and VCR modes. NOTE: This feature does not affect the AUD mode.
To De-Activate Channel Control Lock
- On the remote control, press CBL once; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the CBL key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 -7- 3. The CBL key will blink twice.
- Press CH- once. The CBL key will blink four times.
- Now, the remote control will provide TV and VCR channel-control capabilities while in the TV or VCR mode.
To Re-Activate Channel Control Lock
- On the remote control, press CBL once; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the CBL key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 -7- 3. The CBL key will blink twice.
- Press CH+ once. The CBL key will blink twice.
- Now, regardless of what mode you select (except AUD), only the channel control capability of your Digital SmartBox will be accessible.
Programming ID Lock
The Digital Remote is locked at the factory to operate a Scientific Atlanta cable converter. However, if you have another brand or model of cable converter or satellite service that you would like to control, then you’ll need to perform the following steps to unlock the ID Lock, enter in a new manufacturer’s code, and lock the ID Lock again.
- Turn on the cable converter.
- On the remote control, press CBL once; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the CBL key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 8 - 2. The CBL key will blink four times, indicating ID Lock is unlocked.
- Perform the instructions in Programming Device Control to program device control for the desired cable converter or satellite receiver. Upon completion, perform the remaining steps (5 and 6 on this page) to again lock the ID Lock.
- On the remote control, press CBL once; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the CBL key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 8 - 2. The CBL key will blink twice, indicating ID Lock is again locked.
Programming "Tune-In" Keys For Specific Channels
The Digital Remote includes three "Tune-In" keys (located directly below the MUTE and LAST keys). Each can be programmed to remember three of your favorite cable channel settings for a total of nine channels. If you want to change the cable channels in a previously-programmed "Tune-In" key, you’ll need to clear the key first. To Program A "Tune-In" Key:
- On the remote control, press CBL once; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the CBL key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 5. The CBL key will blink twice. Then select a "Tune-In" key and press it once.
- Press CBL once followed by the channel number to be programmed (e.g., 3 - 9). NOTE: If you are programming a channel for a Digital Cable Converter, you need to enter all channels in a 3-digit channel format. For example, if the desired channel is 39, then enter it as 0 - 3 - 9.
- Press and hold SETUP until the CBL key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- To add another channel, repeat steps 1 through 4, substituting the new channel to be added in step 3. NOTE: Programming more than three channels on the same "Tune-In" key will overwrite previous settings.
To Clear A "Tune-In" Key
- On the remote control, press CBL once; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the CBL key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 5. The CBL key will blink twice. Then select a "Tune-In" key you want to clear and press it once.
- Press and hold SETUP until the CBL key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- This "Tune-In" key is now clear and ready for reprogramming (see above – To Program A "Tune-In" Key). If desired, repeat steps 1 though 3 in this section to clear another "Tune-In" key.
Using The Master Power Key
The Digital Remote has a unique feature that allows you to sequentially turn on or off up to five of your home entertainment devices with a single key press. To Program The Master Power Key:
- On the remote control, press and hold SETUP until the last-selected device key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 5. The last-selected device key will blink twice. Then press PWR once.
- For the first device you want in the power on sequence, press a device key (e.g., CBL) once.
- Repeat step 3 up to four more times to add the second, third, fourth, and fifth device, as desired.
- To save the settings and exit the program, press and hold SETUP until the last-selected device key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
To Operate The Master Power Key
NOTE: If MASTER POWER is not programmed, pressing it will only command the last-selected device to power on or off.
- After programming, point the remote control at the devices.
- Press and hold PWR for at least 2 seconds. You will see the devices power on or off according to the programmed sequence.
To Clear The Master Power Key
- Perform steps 1 and 2 in the first section above, To Program The Master Power Key.
- To clear the settings and exit the program, press and hold SETUP until the last-selected device key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
Re-assigning Device Keys
The Digital Remote can be set up to control a second device. For example, to have the unit control a TV, a Cable Converter, and two DVD Players, you will need to re-assign the unused AUX key to operate the second DVD Player as follows:
- On the remote control, press AUX once; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the AUX key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 2. The AUX key will blink twice.
- Press DVD once, then press AUX once. The AUX key will blink twice.
- The AUX key is now ready to be programmed for your second DVD player.
- To re-assign other device keys, repeat steps 1 to 4 and substitute the key sequence using the following chart:

- To re-assign another unused device key, substitute it for the AUX key above and then perform the sequence. For example, to re-assign an unused AUD key as a second DVD key, perform AUD - SETUP - 9 - 9 - 2 - DVD - AUD. When a re-assignment is done, the selected device key (e.g., AUD) will blink twice to confirm your choice. At that time, you will need to program device control.
Changing Volume Lock
On this remote control, Global Volume Lock is set to TV, so you can control TV volume while in the AUX, DVD, TV or CBL mode. If desired, you can still perform Individual Volume Unlock on a selected device to set its volume control for independent operation. NOTE: The audio mode’s volume controls are active regardless of Volume Lock settings. However, if you lock the volume controls to the AUD mode, you will have control of the audio device’s volume in all other modes (i.e., AUX, DVD, TV, and CBL).
To Unlock Volume Control For A Single Device (Individual Volume Unlock)
- Assuming Global Volume Lock is active, select a mode on the remote control that you want to unlock (e.g., CBL) and press it once. Next, press and hold SETUP until the device key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 3. The last-selected device key will blink twice.
- Press VOL- once. The last-selected device key will blink four times.
- Repeat steps 1 through 3 (of this section) for each device you want volume to be unlocked.
- Now, after you select a device that has volume unlocked (e.g., CBL), pressing VOL+, VOL-, or MUTE, will control the device’s volume only in its own mode.
To Unlock All Volume Control (Global Volume Unlock)
- On the remote control, press and hold SETUP until the last-selected device key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 3. The last-selected device key will blink twice.
- Press VOL+ once. The last-selected device key will blink four times.

If you have another brand of cable converter or a satellite receiver you would like to control, you'll need to unlock the cable ID Lock before changing the converter code (see Programming Cable ID Lock below).
- Locate the device's setup code in Setup Codes for the Digital Remote.
- Turn the device on.
- Holding the Digital Remote away from the TV, press device key you wish to program (i.e.: VCR, DVD, AUD, etc.); it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the selected mode key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter the first 4-digit code the device. If performed correctly, the selected mode key will blink twice.
- Point the Digital Remote at the device and press POWER to test the device. If this did not work properly, repeat these steps using a different code.
- Repeat the steps above for each device you want the Digital Remote to operate.
Setting up a Combo Unit
If you own a combo unit such as a TV/VCR Combo or a TV/DVD Combo, the following instructions will help you program your Digital Remote to control each of the devices. In the following example, you will be setting up a TV/VCR combo device. If you wish to use these instructions to control a different combo device, please substitute the correct device key where appropriate.
- Locate the VCR setup code in Setup Codes for the Digital Remote.
- Turn on the combo unit.
- Holding the Digital Remote away from the combo unit, press the AUXbutton; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the AUX key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter the first 4-digit code the device. If performed correctly, the AUX key will blink twice.
- Point the Digital Remote at the device and press POWER to test the device. If this did not work properly, repeat these steps using a different code.
- Locate the TV setup code in Setup Codes for the Digital Remote.
- Turn on the combo unit.
- Holding the Digital Remote away from the combo unit, press the TVbutton; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the TV key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter the first 4-digit code the device. If performed correctly, the TV key will blink twice.
- Point the Digital Remote at the device and press POWER to test the device. If this did not work properly, repeat these steps using a different code.

Using Learning
The Digital Remote with Learning includes a Learning feature so you can add functions that are unique to your home entertainment devices (e.g.,VCR Tracking Up or Down). However, there are some considerations.
Learning Precautions
- Your original remote controls must be in working order for learning to work properly.
- Learned keys are mode-specific, so each one can store a unique function for each mode.
- Do not use the following keys for learning: Device Keys, SETUP, Record (•), Tune-In Keys.
- Learning capacity is approximately 16 to 25 keys, depending on the code being learned.
- Certain device functions are not learnable including multi-frequency types, some high frequency ones, and other unusual formats.
- For optimum learning, avoid high levels of ambient light such as natural sunlight or energy-efficient fluorescent lights.
NOTE: Please have your original remote controls handy before programming learning.
Programming a Learned Key
NOTE: If more than 15 seconds pass between key presses, the remote exits programming.
- Press and hold SETUP until the last-selected mode key blinks twice, then slowly press 9 - 7 - 5.
NOTE: If the LED displays one long flash instead, either your batteries are low, or the Digital Remote with Learning has a memory fault.
- Press a mode key once (i.e., VCR, DVD, AUD, etc.) to assign a mode for learning.
- Press the key on your Digital Remote that learns the new code.
- Place the Digital Remote with Learning head-to-head (about 2" apart) from your original remote control. Also locate the key (on your original remote control) that you want the Digital Remote with Learning to learn.
- On the original remote, press and hold the key to be learned. The Digital Remote with Learning’s LED will blink rapidly, then turn off. Continue holding the key on the original remote until the Digital Remote with Learning’s LED blinks twice.
NOTE: If the LED displays one long blink, a learning error has occurred. Try repeating this step again until a successful capture occurs. If the function is still not captured, press and hold SETUP to exit programming and review the "Learning Precautions" above.
- Repeat steps 2 through 5 for another mode and/or key or press and hold SETUP to exit programming.
Deleting a Single Learned Key
This process returns the key to its original programming for the mode you select. You can also delete learned programming by teaching a different function to the key.
NOTE: If more than 15 seconds pass between key presses, the remote exits programming.
- Press and hold SETUP until the last-selected mode key blinks twice, then slowly press 9 - 7 - 6.
- Press a mode key once (i.e., VCR, DVD, AUD, etc.).
- Press the key containing the learned function to be deleted twice. The remote will blink twice.
- Repeat steps 2 through 3 for another key or press and hold SETUP to exit programming.
Deleting All Learned Keys in a Specific Mode
This process returns a single mode (i.e., VCR, DVD, AUD, etc.) to its original programming.
NOTE: If more than 15 seconds pass between key presses, the remote exits programming.
- Press and hold SETUP until the last-selected mode key blinks twice, then slowly press 9 - 7 - 5.
- Press a mode key twice (i.e., VCR, DVD, AUD, etc.).
- Press the key containing the learned function to be deleted twice. The remote will blink twice.
- Repeat steps 2 through 3 for another key or press and hold SETUP to exit programming.

Changing Volume Lock
Volume Lock allows you to control the volume through the device identified as having your primary speaker(s), regardless of which mode you are using. On the Digital Remote with Learning, Global Volume Lock is set to TV, so you can control TV volume while in the VCR, DVD, TV or CBL mode. You can perform Individual Volume Unlock on a selected device to set its volume control for independent operation.
To Unlock Volume Control For A Single Device (Individual Volume Unlock)
- Assuming Global Volume Lock is active, select a mode on the remote control that you want to unlock (e.g., CBL) and press it once. Next, press and hold SETUP until the device key blinks twice, then release SETUP.

- Enter 9 - 9 - 3. The last-selected device key will blink twice.
- Press VOL+ once. The last-selected device key will blink four times.
To Lock Volume Control to One Mode (Global Volume Lock)
NOTE:The audio mode's (AUD) volume controls are active regardless of Volume Lock settings. However, if you lock the volume controls to the AUD mode, you will have control of the audio device's volume in all other modes (i.e., VCR, DVD, TV, and CBL). This can be an advantage if, for example, you always listen to home entertainment devices through your receiver’s speakers.
- On the remote control, press and hold SETUP until the last-selected device key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 3. The last-selected device key will blink twice.
- Select a mode (e.g., TV or AUD) which you want to use to control the volume, and press that device's mode key. The selected device key will blink twice.
- Now, when you press VOL+, VOL-, or MUTE, the volume of the selected device (e.g., TV) is controlled regardless of mode.
Programming ID Lock
The Digital Remote is locked at the factory to operate your Digital SmartBox. However, if you have another brand or model of cable converter or satellite service that you would like to control, then you’ll need to perform the following steps to unlock the ID Lock, enter in a new manufacturer’s code, and lock the ID Lock again.

Programming Macro Keys
The Digital Remote with Learning includes two macro keys (located directly below the MUTE and LAST keys). Macro keys allow you to set up key macros to activate certain keys in a specific order. For example, you can set up a key macro to change the channels on your TV, raise or lower the volume, and start recording on your VCR, all with the touch of one key. If you want to change the macros stored in a previously-programmed macro key, you'll need to clear the key first (see "Clearing a Macro Key" below).
Programming a Macro Key
- On the Digital Remote, press and hold SETUP until it blinks twice.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 5. The SETUP key blinks twice.
- Select a macro key (for example, F1) and press it once.
- Press the key sequence you want to program into the macro. For example, to turn on your TV and raise its volume, press TV followed by VOL+.
NOTE: You can program up to 15 key presses into one macro.
- Press and hold SETUP until it blinks twice.
- To add another macro, repeat steps 1 through 5, substituting the new key sequence to be added in step 4.
Clearing A Macro Key
- On the Digital Remote, press and hold SETUP until it blinks twice.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 5. The SETUP key blinks twice.
- Select the macro key you want to clear and press it once.
- Press and hold SETUP until it blinks twice.
Using The Master Power Key
The Digital Remote has a unique feature that allows you to sequentially turn on or off up to five of your home entertainment devices with a single key press.
Programing The Master Power Key
- On the remote control, press and hold SETUP until the last-selected device key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 5. The last-selected device key will blink twice. Then press PWR once.
- For the first device you want in the power on sequence, press a device key (e.g., CBL) once.
- Repeat step 3 up to four more times to add the second, third, fourth, and fifth device, as desired.
- To save the settings and exit the program, press and hold SETUP until the last-selected device key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
To Operate The Master Power Key
NOTE: If MASTER POWER is not programmed, pressing it will only command the last-selected device to power on or off.
- After programming, point the remote control at the devices.
- Press PWR once. You will see the devices power on or off according to the programmed sequence.
To Clear The Master Power Key
- On the remote control, press and hold SETUP until the last-selected device key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 5. The last-selected device key will blink twice.
- Press and release PWR once.
- Press and hold SETUP until the CBL key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
Re-assigning Device Keys
The Digital Remote with Learning can be set up to control a second device of an already-assigned type. For example, to have the unit control a TV, a Cable Converter, and two audio devices (for example, two audio receivers), re-assign the unused VCR key to operate the second audio device as follows:
- On the remote control, press VCR once; it will blink once. Then press and hold SETUP until the VCR key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
- Enter 9 - 9 - 2. The VCR key will blink twice.
- Press AUD once, then press VCR once. The VCR key will blink twice.
- The VCR key is now ready to be programmed for your second audio device. To re-assign other device keys, repeat steps 1 to 4 and substitute the key sequences as desired.
Clearing Custom Programming
The Digital Remote with Learning contains a Custom Programming Reset program. You can use it to remove all custom programming, except your setup codes and reassigned device keys.
IMPORTANT: Executing this program will erase all custom settings for Volume Lock, Learned Keys, Tune-In Keys, and Channel Lock. However, your device programming remains.
- On the remote control, press and hold SETUP until the last-selected device key blinks twice.
- Enter 9 - 8 - 0. The last-selected device key blinks twice, pauses, and blinks twice again to confirm that all custom programming is cleared.
