Getting started describes how to:

  • Connect the Digital SmartBox in various setups
  • Program the remote control
  • Turn on the TV
  • Use the Digital SmartBox
  • Setup and record using a VCR
  • Use the channel banner and program guide.

Connecting the Digital SmartBox

  1. Connect your Digital SmartBox according to one of the three diagrams provided below. The cable should always run from the wall to the Digital SmartBox first. Menus and premium services will not work correctly if the cable does not run to the Digital SmartBox first.
  2. From the Digital SmartBox cable out connection, run the coaxial cable to your TV's cable in connection.
  3. After your Digital SmartBox is connected, powered and turned on, with your TV tuned to Channel 3, contact us to have your SmartBox activated.
  4. Your Digital SmartBox must be activated via telephone. If your Digital SmartBox doesn't work within 30 minutes, please call us back.

Stereo TV and Digital SmartBox

Note: The cable should be run to the Digital SmartBox first, then change video to Video. If your TV has multiple stereo inputs, cycle through all the setting using the video source button until your picture appears.

Stereo TV, Hi-Fi VCR and Digital SmartBox

Note: The cable should be run to the Digital SmartBox first, then change video to Video. If your TV has multiple stereo inputs, cycle through all the setting using the video source button until your picture appears. Your VCR may be on any channel with this option.

Non-Stereo TV, VCR and Digital SmartBox

Note: The cable should be run to the Digital SmartBox first, and the TV must be tuned to channel 3. The VCR must also be tuned to channel 3 when using the Digital SmartBox.

. Return to the channel you last tuned using the numbered buttons
. Tune to the next favorite channel
. Rewind VCR tape or video-on-demand (VOD) movie
. Fast forward VCR tape or VOD movie
. Pause VCR tape or VOD movie
. Stop VCR tape or VOD movie
. Play VCR tape or VOD movie
. Record current program on VCR tape
. Bypass Digital SmartBox to tune directly on the TV
. Activate VCR's TV/VCR switch
. Direct the Play, Pause, Stop, Forward, Rewind, and Record buttons to either the VCR or a VOD movie

. Move the highlight to the right
. Move the highlight to the left
. Turn the volume on or off
. Adjust the volume -- press '+' to increase the volume; press '-' to decrease the volume
. Change the channel -- press '+' to channel up; press '-' to channel down
. Exit the current Navigator item (channel banner, program guide, menus)
. Scroll one page in the program guide (4 lines) or General Settings menu (5 lines); press '+' to page up; press '-' to page down
. Perform the action that the Navigator screen indicates

Turning on the TV, Digital SmartBox, and VCR

To turn on the TV

  • Press the TV button. The TV turns on. If not, refer to Programming the Remote. To turn on the Digital SmartBox
  • Press the CBL button. The Digital SmartBox turns on. (This is pre-programmed by your cable provider.)

To turn on the VCR

Changing Channels

To change channels

  • If you know the channel number, enter the number using the number buttons. Press the SELECT button for immediate tuning.
  • To go one channel up from the current channel, press '+' on the CH button.
  • To go one channel down from the current channel, press '-' on the CH button.
  • To see the previously tuned channel (tuned to with the numbered buttons), press the LAST button.
  • To see the next channel that you specified as a favorite channel, press the FAV button.

Adjusting the volume level

To adjust the volume level

  • To increase the volume level, press '+' on the VOL button.
  • To decrease the volume level, press '-' on the VOL button.
  • To turn off the volume completely, press the MUTE button.
  • To restore the volume and continue listening to the program, press the MUTE button again.
  • If your remote does not change the volume, refer to "Programming the Remote Control to Control the TV's Volume" in Programming the Remote Control.

Displaying and browsing the channel banner

Navigator includes the channel banner to provide quick access to information about the program title and the program's start and end times. The figure to the right shows the channel banner.

The channel banner shows this information:
  • The channel logo, number, and call letters
  • The program title, start time, and end time
  • The current time
  • Navigator symbols where appropriate

You can browse program title and time information with the channel banner -- this allows you to continue watching the current program while checking program information for other channels and times. The figure to the right shows the channel banner while you are browsing.

The next procedure describes how to display the channel banner and how to browse program title and time information in the channel banner.

Note: The channel banner automatically displays when you change channels.



To display the channel banner

  1. Press the INFO button. The channel banner displays the program title and time of the currently tuned program.
  2. To browse other program titles and times, use the arrow buttons shown here.
  3. To tune to a channel shown in the channel banner, press the SELECT button.
  4. Press the INFO button a second time to see a program description.
  5. To hide the channel banner, press the INFO button a third time or press the EXIT button. The channel banner disappears.

Note: If you do not press the INFO button to hide the channel banner, it automatically disappears after several seconds.

. The channel that is one channel down from the current channel

. The program scheduled after the program shown in the channel banner
. The program schedule previous to the program shown in the channel banner

Understanding Navigator symbols

There are several symbols that you may see in Navigator, for example, in the program guide. The table describes each symbol.

This Symbol Indicates
lock_symbol A program blocked by channel, rating, or time period with parental control currently enabled
unlock_symbol A program blocked by channel, rating, or time period with parental control currently disabled
fav symbol A channel currently marked as a favorite channel
stereo_symbol A program with stereo sound
closedcap_symbol A program with closed caption information (subtitles for hearing-impaired viewers)
secondary_symbol A program with secondary audio; viewers can choose to hear audio in another language
. A program with VCR timer; you specified this program to be recorded
dollar_symbol A program that has been purchased
. A program with a reminder timer
